Aloe vera flowers in bloom

Postby newt on Wed Nov 19, 2008 8:58 pm

Hi! I grow several aloe vera plants and my largest, which is around 4 years old grow a tall stem from its center, filled with buds.

I'm hoping they will soon turn into blooms of flowers. I have seen many aloe vera plants in my day, but I've never seen blooms on any of them. Can someone out there enlighten me and/or send me a picture of one in bloom. I have no way at present to take a picture of mine and put it on the net.

Hi newt and welcome to the forum. Your first post is great. You are very fortunate. Your plant must be very happy! You can find a lot of pictures by going to images.google.com or flickr.com and typing "aloe vera flowers".

Usually older specimens bloom, producing a tall stock covered with bright colored coral flowers. Aloe flower nectar is a favorite of hummingbirds.

That is beautiful, after reading a number of posts in this section i am going to a) start trying to clone my plants by taking an end of one of the leaves and replanting it. and b) try and look after it so much it will bloom those beautiful flowers.

Can we harvest aloe vera gel from our own aloe vera plants, or does it need to have some sort of process to get the gel?
People have claimed the usage of aloe vera gel as an herbal treatment for a variety of conditions.
